About the Artist
Bio
Megan Tran is a visual artist from
Lafayette, Louisiana in the Southern United States. Her work is autobiographical, drawing upon
experiences growing up in Southern Louisiana, an area steeped in deep religious
and cultural traditions. Each piece explores a specific scene in her life. Some detail a strained childhood where
memories are simultaneously happy and painful, or they examine her recent
journey into motherhood with complicated emotions that are often too taboo to
discuss. Her work spans multiple mediums,
dripping with symbolism and little jokes, as she weaves together beautiful
botanicals and figures with unpleasant pests.
She aims to highlight how wonderful and terrible life can be at the same
time; how the most beautiful moments of life still carry dark shadows and our
deepest depression glitters with hope.
Artist Statement
Meg paints as a way to connect with people, and reconnect with herself. She uses several different mediums, however, her overall style balances whimsy and realism with the goal of capturing the feeling of a memory. Hidden details and symbolic elements are woven throughout her work, adding layers of personal meaning beneath the surface. She enjoys painting portraits because she wants to capture the feeling of being with that person. Her "Free Little Portrait" popups began as an exercise in building speed and social confidence, but have morphed into a joyful practice of community-building.
